Is LIV Golf Growing?
LIV Golf League began its first tournament of the year at Mayakoba Country Club in Cancun this past weekend. After gaining some star power in the offseason with big names such as Jon Rahm and Tyrell Hatton, LIV has been hoping to grow in terms of viewership in America. Last weekend was also a large PGA tournament filled with star names and played at one of the most iconic courses in the world, Pebble Beach. Although LIV has tried to claim it is growing at a rapid rate, its viewership numbers show differently.
LIV Golf pulled in a total of 168,000 viewers for their round on Saturday, while the PGA had 11 times that number with 1.9 million viewers. Sunday was a different story though when the final round of the PGA got cancelled, this brought in around 430,000 viewers for LIV. While this is an increase in views from their season opener last year, LIV is still nowhere near the PGA in terms of views. This may be due to the contracts the PGA has with cable providers and TV companies making it fairly easy to turn on your TV and have access to PGA. LIV on the other hand has an exclusive deal with the CW, this makes their pool of potential viewers so much smaller than that of the PGA. Will we see LIV change how they broadcast their events to try and keep up with the PGA?
